In group 3 the ‘official’ school starts. The time of only playing at school is over and the teachers will immediately start teaching reading, writing, spelling, (mental) arithmetic and so on.
For some children that can be difficult because the change is very big compared to group 2. Because of my experience I learnt how I can make the reading, mathematics and writing nice for children. If the children are pushed, it works the other way but if the children are having fun the development goes much faster. That’s the reason I find it very important that the children are having fun working together with me. And that they are allowed to make mistakes! Focus points are the speed of reading and to make calculations with adding and subtracting until 20 (mental arithmetic). Only then they are able to understand story sums.
What I am going to work on with children from group 3:
1. Reading words and later sentences
2. Reading books together (with theater books to make it interactive)
3. Giving dictation matched to the level at school
4. Practising mental arithmetic (first 0 to 20)
5. Teaching how to make story sums (with roadmap + keywords)
6. Making mindmaps to practise vocabulary
7. Making Trial Citotest extercises -> Middle + End group 3 level (M3 + E3)
8. Making One Minute Reading Tests + Technical Reading Tests for AVI level
9. The reading level at the end of group 3 has to be at least: AVI E3.
In the middle/end of group 3 I am starting to lend books to children to stimulate the reading. In one week they have to finish the book and answer short questions about it. That is a good preperation for the homework I will give starting from group 4.
